Tories pick Iraq veteran to take on Blair
http://politics.guardian.co.uk/election/story/0,15803,1444256,00.html

"""""""" The Conservatives today picked a former RAF group captain who
served in Iraq to fight Tony Blair in his Sedgefield constituency at the
forthcoming general election.
The prime minister will face Group Captain Al Lockwood - who appeared on TV
screens as a military spokesman during the conflict - in his north-east
constituency.

In a local contest which is shaping up to focus on Iraq, Mr Blair will also
face anti-war candidate Reg Keys, the father of a killed military policeman,
and David Shayler, the ex-MI5 spy turned campaigner, who have declared their
intention to stand against him. """""""""""

Looks like Mr Blair is going to have to spend some time watching his back
yard is OK.

In Sedgefield? Seriously, there's no chance at all of any Tory
candidate winning there. You'd be asking for the people who used to
work in the pits and related industrial sites to vote for the people
who put them on the dole and tried to cripple their community.

I fancy the chance of the Red Cap's father because between intellect and
emotion and imagination, emotion will usually win. Miners used to facing
the hazardous life underground may have a huge sympathy for the soldiers
and their families, They may also have serving sons. I think someone said
it's exactly the same size majority Martin Bell overturned to win the
seat from Neil Hamilton? I thought TB had an enormous majority in
Sedgefield though I didn;t know Hamilton had such a size majority??

Yes we should have continued paying massive subsides to unsustainable
industries that make or produce goods that noone wants and we can't export.
Imagine if the coal industry had continued as it was - piles of coal doing
nothing , especially as nowadays the environment lobby is large and
powerful, they'd be delighted for us all to be still burning coal.

Totally different demographic in Tatton, where I believe Hamilton's
majority was over 20k. The people of Sedgefield may well have sympathy
for the man, and certainly many of them will have been as anti war as
most people here. That doesn't mean that they'll vote Tory.
